'Rockstar'ring the Indian Music scene!
October 3rd 2011 20:09
The average Indian does not go about-a-rockin'. No sir. He is brought up on a strict and unvarying diet of melodies - classical and otherwise. Speaking for myself I have no idea about how Rock is different from Rock and Roll, leave alone talk about Progressive or Alternative Rock. You could as well talk in Greek or Latin.
But as they say Music is beyond language. In this case, it penetrates beyond the veil of my lack of Rock knowledge and/or aptitude. Each song in this 14 song album is stellar. Nothing short of it. If ever Rahman decides to do a live performance of these songs ('Sadda Haq' anyone?) I will be there and I am sure I will be a miniscule part of a humongous crowd.
Oh and another small thing. It is time to again be proud of being Indian. Perhaps there are very few genres of music which lend themselves to easy palatability across boundaries and musical culture. Our own Bhangra has it to mix and meld with Rock or for that matter, most other genres and come out shining and splendorous. It is a hard heart that does not melt and want to let it all go with one leg lifted and both hands in the air when hearing the trademark Bhangra vibes and full throated singing.
Paajis - tussi great ho!
And despite all the accolades and the resultant popularity, Rahman continues to be a trendsetter - delightfully so. May he live long and provide us with such enjoyment, helping us move out of our own somewhat dim and less-than-exciting lives!
[PS - As you can tell, it has been a long time since I have had some truly great fun with a music album. So feel free to take everything with a pinch of salt or whatever it is you take in such cases
