Refractions coming through the Tricoloured Indian prism...

Fixing fixtures

December 1st 2010 14:00

A couple of months back one among the very small group of readers who follow this blog popped me this question - Why don't you write a single word about the phenomenon that is rocking the cricket world at the moment? Obviously folks he was talking about the whole mysterious Sport fixing, oops, Spot fixing scandal.

I did not have a ready answer for the gentleman then. But now that I have had time to think about it, it is this way. I love the game way too deeply to contemplate moving away from it. To focus on these low acts would load me up with a lot of negative energy. Its like how relationships work. If you want to keep the love torch burning you are going to have to gloss over some stuff that is, let us say, less than ideal. So, yes, as things go Spot fixing is as far away from ideal as can be. But the good thing with sport is that with so many perspectives and participants you can always find a diversion. And so I did...

Why am I writing about this very subject now? I don't know...perhaps to express my hitherto repressed frustration over young pace sensation Mohammad Aamer being named in this whole imbroglio. To me he was one of the brightest (if not the brightests) prospects as far as fast bowling this decade was concerned. And there he goes by the wayside. Either a victim or a villain - in either case ending up tarnished and tattered.

To me the only thing(s) that need(s) fixing is a broken object or maybe a drink after a hard day's work (or play). A predilection to fix anything else reveals a total lack of character and gumption. And without character there is no grace, romance or timelessness to sport.
