Destiny's child and The Cup that Counts..
March 30th 2011 04:38
To get to your 800th wicket with your last ball and to then get a wicket off your last ball in One Day International cricket (in Lanka) - that has to have some significance. Murali was and will continue to be Destiny's child. In departing from the Test and ODI scene, he has left behind targets which appear to be mere mirages for his compatriots.
Much is made of this World Cup in rating this as 'the Cup that counts' in India. All the excitement will gradually die out if India lose. But regardless of the result, this is a Farewell cup for many great and some not-so-great players.
As much as we want him to play on, I think this is Tendulkar's last World Cup. Perhaps even for somebody like Zaheer Khan - given that he is a fast bowler. Australia without Ponting at the helm is going to be a whole new entity. So too would be South Africa without Graeme Smith. Closer to home, Younis Khan, Shoaib Akhtar and Jayawardene bow out with this tournament.
Leaving alone all the tearful farewells, this tournament has yet again proved all the naysayers wrong. ODIs are not an endangered species! They can hold their own.
